Wates wins £21m build contract with BAE Systems
The contractor will build BAE Systems’ new Central Training Facility in Barrow-in-Furness, which will be used by the company’s growing number of apprentices.
The contract is the latest in a line of projects delivered by Wates on behalf of BAE Systems Submarines. This includes the recent completion of the Resolution Building, the first new build in the redevelopment of BAE’s Barrow shipyard.
Construction of the 88,000 sq ft Central Training Facility is expected to start later this month and will see Wates create a teaching block with reception, classrooms and offices.
The development will also include a central street with welfare facilities, craft workshops, changing rooms and a restaurant.
The architect is McBains Cooper.
Tony Johns, managing director of BAE Systems Submarines, said: “The new facility will provide a modern learning environment to supplement the training our apprentices already receive.”
The £300m eight-year programme of redevelopment at BAE’s Barrow submarine site includes new facilities and the refurbishment of existing buildings. The plans form part of BAE’s preparation to build nuclear submarines to replace Trident.
