Trafford targeting summer start for £18m Partington Sports Village

Kier Construction will head to site in late July as long as plans for the project are approved in the meantime.

The £18m redevelopment of Partington Sports Village will see the ageing leisure centre modernised.

The scheme, designed by Ellis Williams Architects comprises:

  • A four-court sports hall
  • A four-lane 20-metre swimming pool
  • An enlarged fitness suite
  • A multi-functional studio
  • An immersive indoor cycle studio
  • An extended café with an outdoor terrace area.

The proposed refurbishment will also see improvements made to the centre’s energy systems; air source heat pumps will be introduced alongside solar panels.

Cllr Catherine Hynes, Trafford Council’s deputy leader and executive member for culture, leisure and strategic partnerships, said: “This proposed leisure centre development is absolutely fantastic news for the people of Trafford and Partington and Carrington in particular.

“We are planning to totally transform this centre like we did at move Urmston and the results could be just as impressive. Via the Levelling Up Fund, supported by additional Sport England funding, we are investing millions of pounds into this project as we believe that is the right thing to do to ensure residents are given top-class facilities to help them improve their health and fitness.”

Work is due to complete by 2026. The project will benefit from cash from the government’s Levelling Up Fund.

Earlier this year, the Department for Levelling Up, Homes, and Communities has granted the council an extra 12 months to complete the renovation project, extending the funding deadline to March 2026.

The facility, which is managed by Trafford Leisure – a community interest company wholly owned by Trafford Council – will close while the work takes place.

Jo Cherrett chief executive of Trafford Leisure said: “We understand the temporary closure is disruptive for our customers and have made every effort to provide our community with alternative locations for their wellbeing.

“However, we are excited about the future, and how this proposed new centre would bring the community of Partington and the surrounding villages, including Carrington, together as a focal point for wellness.”

The project team also features Max Associates, ISG, Kier, Adept, Curtins, Tace, Land Studio, Jensen Hughes, JPP, Tree Solutions, and Hann Tucker Associates.
