Three named in Egremont Castle shortlist

Architects from the UK, Switzerland and US have been shortlisted in a competition to transform a ruined West Cumbrian castle into an all-weather events venue.

Creative Egremont, a public art regeneration strategy, has announced a final shortlist of three for the RIBA open competition for Egremont Castle. The finalists, picked from 27 entrants, are:

  • Jean Gilles Decosterd, from Lausanne, Switzerland
  • Yehre Suh and Justin Kwok, from Brooklyn, US
  • Moxon with Built Engineers from London

The competition is to design a removable performance pavilion that can be erected inside the central baille of the 12th Century castle to host concerts, plays and other public events, regardless of the weather.

Creative Egremont is a public art strategy devised by Grizedale Arts in partnership with the Egremont & Area Regeneration Partnership. Their strategy aims to improve opportunities for arts and culture in the town as part of its ongoing regeneration. The RIBA competition is funded by urban regeneration company West Lakes Renaissance and Arts Council England.

Alistair Hudson, of Grizedale Arts, said: "What I found particularly exciting was the application of the latest technical building techniques to ensure the sensitive treatment the castle structure and to bring this historic building back into the life of the community."

The overall winner of the competition will be announced in November following an interview presentation to a board of judges.
