Thornton Hough hotel completes cottage renovation

A Wirral hotel has finished a four-bedroom cottage conversion partly funded by grants from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.

The converted Edwardian country house is an annexe to Mere Brook House Hotel near Thornton Hough doubling the size of the hotel, the main hotel house only having four rooms also.

The architect was Richard Mallinson from Taylor Young and the contractor was Wirral-based JFW Construction.

The grants were made by the Merseyside Rural Leader Programme and the Rural Northwest Tourism Connect Project, both European aid initiatives.

Owners Lorna and Donald Tyson employed Stiebel Eltron and Parr One to design and install a cost and energy efficient heating and hot water system for the renovated cottage.

Lorna said: "The converted cottage needed everything gutting and renovating and we have spent a lot of time and money to create an extra four bedrooms and luxury meeting and lounge rooms. We have created a boutique offering, blending traditional design and furniture alongside contemporary themes.

"We have invested a substantial amount of time and effort, putting a lot of attention into detail while retaining the need to be cost effective, and are delighted with the results. When we started looking at the refurbishment we also wanted to be as efficient as possible with our energy consumption. Through our long-standing relationship with Stiebel Eltron and managing director Mark McManus – who has used the hotel for conference facilities for the past few years – we decided to look at using green energy technology."
