Southway proposes Levenshulme Cricket Club pads

The housing association wants to build 50 affordable houses at the disused Elsa Road sports field.

Proposals for the three-acre former Levenshulme Cricket Club site, which has not been used for sports for many years and is overgrown, comprise a mix of two-, three-, and four-bedroom homes with 21 for rent and 29 for shared ownership.

The homes will be two-storey brick and tile houses in response to the local vernacular.

Pegasus is advising on planning and Calderpeel is leading on design.

Southway Housing acquired the three-acre site from Manchester City Council last year as part of a deal that saw the local authority dispose of 10 sites across the city for 700 homes.

Sites in Moss Side, Gorton, and Miles Platting were among those sold to the likes of MSV, Southway, L&Q, and Legal & General Affordable Homes to help the city council hit its target of 10,000 discounted homes by 2032.

Another green space bites the dust.

By Peter Chapman

Given the changing demographic of Levenshulme, it will be interesting to see if this gives rise to a Chorlton-style campaign where nice left-leaning folk in Patagonia jackets campaign to stop much-needed affordable housing being built since the site has rewilded itself, insert Green objection here, or in this case because they want the adjacent allotments extended so they don’t have to stay on a very long waiting list for one.

What a shame it can’t be used for sporting activities, this country makes me sad.

Great location. Nice little windfall site with lots of existing green space around and there and good access to shops and services. I just wish MCC would push for better street design… why does every road have to 5.5m wide with a 2m footpath on either side? Lots of dead-ends on that Layout that should utilise shared surfaces to slow traffic and increase opportunities for greening the streets. Do better please MCC.
