Shortlist for RIBA Preston office design

A shortlist of architects including several overseas firms has been chosen from over 50 entries to go to the final round of a RIBA competition to design a new office building in Preston.

The firms competing to build the landmark office on an acre next to a roundabout at the corner of Oliver's Place and Eastway, close to J32 of the M6 and J1 of the M55, north of Preston, are:

LH Architekten (Hamburg)

Maxwan Architects & Urbanists (Rotterdam)

Moxon Architects Ltd (London)

Piercy Conner Architects (London)

Stephen Yablon Architect PLLC (New York)

Studio 8 Architects (London)

RIBA said competitors were set the challenge of producing concepts for "an exceptional piece of architecture, which would have a strong visual presence as well as providing a high quality office environment."

The client, an undisclosed private developer, has not demanded a set size for the office but the remit does specify extensive underground parking.

At final judging the six architects will be invited to make presentations to the jury panel, which includes Manchester-based architect Ian Simpson and Nick Johnson of developer Urban Splash.

A winner will be announced in mid-October 2007.
