Scheme for 170 Ellesmere Port homes approved

Promenade Estates and MCI Developments will now set about transforming the derelict 10-acre plot on Meadow Lane, which was previously owned by Hansteen Holdings.

Cheshire West and Chester Council granted planning permission to the scheme on 28 June. The council had given the go-ahead years earlier to build 179 houses on the site, but permission expired before Promenade purchased the land in 2019. Previously the site held a Van Leer Factory for the development of plastics. That factory closed in 2009, according to planning documents.

“We’re delighted with the outcome, which fits very much with our ‘brownfield first’ strategy,” said Promenade managing director Dan Hynd. He added that Promenade is continuing to look for similar opportunities.

Plans for the Meadow Lane scheme call for a mix of one, two, three and four-bed houses. The development will feature affordable rent, rent to buy and shared ownership tenures.

MCI and Promenade are in the midst of discussing the site’s sale to a housing partner. MCI’s regional managing director, Alex Wood, said that construction on the site will hopefully begin in August.

“We have a long-standing specialism in building high-quality affordable homes for registered providers and look forward to delivering an excellent scheme for the people of Ellesmere Port, on a site that has been derelict for over 15 years,” Wood said.

Pegasus Group’s Liverpool office acted as planning consultants on the project. MCI handled the design in-house.
