Salford nears resolution for £39m scheme after Crossfield demise

Seddon Construction is to deliver 177 homes at Longshaw Drive for the local authority, subject to the approval of a design and build contract.

Next week Salford City Council’s procurement board will decide whether to sign-off the award of a £39m construction contract to Seddon, which has already carried out some preliminary works at the Little Hulton site.

Subject to the approval of the contract, the main construction phase is due to start next month and take 155 weeks.

Salford launched a tender for the scheme in 2021 that saw Crossfield Construction score highest with 88.84%, according to council documents.

However, the company is now in the process of being liquidated having collapsed with debts totalling around £6m.

Seddon achieved the second highest score from the procurement exercise – 81.4% – and was therefore selected to take over the project.

On completion of the development, the intention is for 92 units within the scheme to be disposed of to Dérive, Salford City Council’s social housing division. The other 85 units will be available for open market rent and sales.

Elsewhere in the borough, Seddon Construction is also delivering 66 homes on the site of the former St Luke’s CE Primary School in Weaste and 45 homes on the site of the former Irwell Valley High School, home to Alan Boyson’s listed mural the Tree of Knowledge.
