Revamp of Chester promenade to start
Work on the refurbishment of the Groves riverside promenade in Chester city centre will start at the end of January.
An investment of £375,000 is being put towards the scheme and is being delivered in partnership by Cheshire West & Chester Council and Chester Renaissance.
The council said the project will last 11 weeks and takes place between the weir crossing the River Dee and the suspension bridge.
The project is part of an improvement scheme to a number of public areas across Chester.
The Groves link is the final section of works which links with tourist destinations such as the racecourse, the city walls, the River Dee and the Castle.
Work includes:
- Replacing Tarmac footpaths with Yorkstone, an extension of the scheme undertaken last year
- Replacement of grit stone with stone sets
- Planting six large semi-mature Lime trees to replace six others which were removed because of their poor condition. More space will be given to all trees
- 100 benches replaced or refurbished as well as new bins
- Improved signage with a new way finding and welcoming sign
Cllr Stuart Parker, interim chairman of Chester Renaissance, said: "This scheme is part of an ongoing plan to improve the Riverside experience in Chester and will deliver a high quality environment in a very popular area.
"The Groves is one of the 'must see' sights of Chester and the scheme aims to make a visit more welcoming."
Large pedestrian areas of the Groves and also some car parking will be closed during the works and Chester Renaissance and Cheshire West & Chester Council apologise for any inconvenience. A route along the Riverside will remain open during the works.
