PODCAST | How to tackle the UK’s skills shortage

The growing skills shortage and ageing workforce have led to thousands of vacancies in construction, with 35,000 listed in the Office for National Statistics May 2021 jobs report. Despite the worrisome figures, there’s still hope that a crisis can be avoided, according to award-winning construction group HMS, a subsidiary of the Torus Group.

HMS’ managing director Paul Worthington, construction director John Barrow, commercial director Ian McGillivary, and maintenance director Alison Brown joined Place North West deputy editor Julia Hatmaker to hammer out the root causes of the skills shortage and, what is more, discuss what can be done to solve it.
