Plans in for latest project at The Christie
The Christie NHS Foundation Trust has submitted a planning application for a four-storey multi-storey car park on the site of its existing parking facilities on Cotton Lane in Didsbury.
Designed by AFL Architects, the car park next to Maggie’s Centre will provide 565 spaces within a tiered building, and 253 spaces on a reconfigured surface level car park, offering 818 spaces in total. The Christie’s existing parking facility provides 414 spaces.
Spaces will be split over four above-ground levels and a basement level.
Two existing buildings – former nurses’ accommodation which is currently used for offices and temporary accommodation – will be demolished to make way for the car park.
The proposals also include an upgraded road junction at Wilmslow Road and Cotton Road and a new pedestrian crossing to the hospital entrance. The road junction at Cotton Lane and Heyscroft Road will also be improved.
Turley is the planner for the scheme, with Arup as structural engineer. A planning application for the project has been submitted to Manchester City Council.
Interserve looks likely to be the main contractor for the project. The contractor and Arup are both currently on site at The Christie’s proton beam therapy centre, which will be the first such facility of its type in the UK when it completes in April next year.
The £90m project, designed by architect HKS, will provide specialist cancer treatment using proton beam technology – a safer and more effective way of treating cancer than traditional X-ray radiotherapy.
Interserve also previously completed the hospital’s Integrated Procedures Unit.
The contractor has this week been rocked by a further profit warning on its troubled energy-from-waste division, with share prices falling to an all-time low of 59p on Thursday.
How can more creativity and design go in to a multi-storey car park, than most of the new developments going up in the city centre!? Great design…very interesting
