David Anastasiou / Owner / Iliad Group / Development / Liverpool. Has ridden out the recession and is starting to come back to the drawing board with various schemes: retail and leisure Wire Works in Warrington, next to Central station; in Manchester, Formroom Architects has submitted plans on Iliad's behalf for a new boutique hotel on Liverpool Road; consent was granted this year for a 262-bedroom student accommodation scheme in East Village, Liverpool, Iliad's large development delivered over the past decade in Ropewalks.

Graham Anwyl / Owner / Verbier Holdings trading as Anwyl Homes of Distinction / Rhyl. Dominant North Wales house builder, with a dozen sites in the area and into Cheshire. Turned a £1m profit on £35m sales last year.

Roly BardsleyRoly Bardsley / Chairman / Bardsley Construction Group / Dukinfield. Increased turnover to £64.8m from £57.4m and produced a pre-tax profit of £1.5m in 2010. A two-year restructuring exercise to separate the contracting and development businesses into distinct divisions has concluded. Bardsley also added new areas of construction such as health and commercial to its traditional sectors of social housing and education.

Stephen BensonStephen Benson / Chairman and senior partner / Cobbetts LLP / Law / Manchester. Adviser to hotels-to-coffee shops giant Whitbread Group, Orange and T-Mobile tie-up Everything Everywhere, hotel operator De Vere Group and Speedy Hire among others. In addition to his position at Cobbetts, Benson is a non-executive director of CityCo, the city centre management company of Manchester City council, a regional council member of CBI North West, Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and is involved with a number of arts organisations. He was formerly chairman of the British American Business Council North West England.

Dave Bell / Managing director / Bell Developments / Chester. Slowly but surely working through the planning process with a large student village on the edge of Blacon in Chester. The £200m development on 66 acres could house as many as 3,000 students and include restaurant, BMX park and other facilities. Shareholders of Bell developments include Bolton-based developer Charles Topham.

Alan BevanAlan Bevan / Owner / City Residential / Residential sale / Liverpool. Popular and resourceful former sales director of David McLean. Survived the bursting of Liverpool's city living bubble when others failed. This year set up a new company in partnership with universities to offer accredited student accommodation.

Ben du Boulay / Director / Carlyle Group / Investment. Work on the 20,000 sq ft Boilerhouse, the first phase of Soapworks, a mixed-use project between Salford Quays and Manchester city centre, completed in the autumn. A joint venture with Abstract Securities and Nikal, Soapworks was awarded a special planning consent that allows for flexibility in future phases without the need for additional applications. The wider redevelopment of the former Colgate Palmolive factory will contain 400,000 sq ft of offices, retail and leisure space, with 1,200 car parking spaces.

Adam BradyAdam Brady / Head of Manchester office / Henry Boot Developments. Gained consent in June for a 13,500 sq ft office and 14,000 sq ft retail/leisure refurbishment of the County Courts building on Manchester's Deansgate, to be called the Courthouse. Quickly followed by mouth-watering news of signing favoured local restaurant entrepreneur Steve Pilling to a 450-cover restaurant and bar in the ground floor of Courthouse. Pilling won fans with Mr Sam's and Mr Thomas's Chophouses.

Tony Bray / Partner / Cushman & Wakefield / Surveying / Manchester. Retained by private health giant BUPA to manage its new 140,000 sq ft requirement. Publication of the firm's annual European Cities Monitor report has become an anticipated event – chiefly to see Manchester retain its position as the UK's second city.

Matt BrookMatt Brook / Director / Broadway Malyan / Architecture / Liverpool. Also vice-chairman of Places Matter! Design Review, the peer-to-peer architecture advisory service. Broadway Malyan is advising developer St Modwen and Cheshire East Council on much-needed plans for south Macclesfield and designed the new Waitrose in Chester.

Gareth Buckley, Mike Hawkins, Mike Rooney and Mark Williams / Managing partners / WHR Property Consultants / Surveying / Manchester. Involved in some of the region's most high profile deals including most recently the acquisition of The Towers Business Park in Didsbury and the acquisition of Peter House in Manchester city centre as well as the 400,000 sq ft acquisition of Pioneer Point in Liverpool on behalf of Regatta. Also on a number of high-profile instruction including the Co-operative Group's Noma.

Steve Burne / Manging director / AEW Architects / Manchester. Burne completed a management buyout with colleagues, Andy Critchlow and Nigel Machin, this year. AEW started on site at Ronald McDonald House Charities facility at Manchester Children's Hospital, due for completion in April 2012. The practice oversaw 120 McDonalds restaurant 're-imagings' in 2011. Planning consent was obtained for Edge Lane, Liverpool, the 1m sq ft retail park proposed by Derwent Holdings. AEW started on a 2,500-bed student village in Chester and reached completion at St Modwen's Etrop Court in Wythenshawe.

David Burrows / Chief executive / Benmore / Development. The Northern Ireland-based developer is active in Manchester and Liverpool and more can be expected in 2012. In Speke, south Liverpool, Benmore plans a major leisure park on 15 acres of former railway sidings, including hotels, a multi-screen cinema, gym and restaurants. In Manchester, the firm is working on plans to build a hotel tower above a live music venue at the Theatre Royal.

Guy Butler / Projects director / Grosvenor / Liverpool. Butler has been busy re-letting and selling the former Rapid Hardwarde stretch of retail units on Renshaw Street and Bold Street. The parade of six retail and leisure units are now anchored by a Sainsbury's supermarket, sold fully let. Other tenants include Bathroom Empire, Minute Man Press, Fairbridge Charity, and AMP Catering, owner of the Mei Mei Chinese restaurant in Berry Street. Rapid vacated the parade to take the George Henry Lee building Church Street, which Grosvenor inherited when it relocated GHL, as John Lewis, into Liverpool One's Paradise Street.

Ian ButlerIan Butler / Partner / Sheppard Robson / Architecture / Manchester. Highlights for the year include handing over the Orange Building at Media City UK to Salford University and finishing the BBC North fit-out. Received planning permission for Manchester Metropolitan University's new campus, Birley Fields in Hulme in July. Is working with Bruntwood on the former Royal Eye Hospital in Manchester, and Liverpool City Council on its alternative school building programme, EdVenture. The practice is also one of two teams at final tender stage for the major redevelopment of the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, a decision on which is expected mid-2012.

Jim BuxtonJim Buxton / Managing director / Ellis Williams Architects / Preston Brook. The North West studio worked on numerous noteworthy projects that have recently completed: the National Cycling/BMX Centre Manchester, the last tranche of Manchester Building Schools for the Future Schools, Great Sankey Sixth Form College, the Fuse Trafford My Place Youth Village, Liverpool Community College Learner Centre. New work won this year includes £20m mixed-use scheme North Place Cheltenham, a £60m hotel resort in Tblisi Georgia with EWA's Berlin office and the Welsh National Sailing Academy and Events Centre Pwllheli, a £3.5m project.

Mark Caldwell / Managing Director / Bluemantle Group / Development / Alderley Edge. Secured planning for a 30 acre missed use development in Holmes Chapel. A Little Waitrose opened at its retail scheme, The Parade in Alderley Edge.

Mark Canning and Conrad O'Neill / Canning O'Neill / Surveyors / Manchester. Advised on transactions including 35,540 sq ft at the Metro office building in Salford Quays to Insight and SKM Consulting. At Jackson House, Sale, let 14,000 sq ft to Smooth Financial, the largest office letting in Sale/Altrincham in 2011. Also launched Canning O'Neill Media, providing specialist property services to the media and creative industries.

David CheethamDavid Cheetham / Managing partner / Cheetham & Mortimer / Retail agency / Manchester. Advising Realty Estates on The Gateway, Piccadilly. Instructed by Genr8 and Kajima as agent on their £150m Rochdale town centre redevelopment. Instructed by Henry Boot Developments to let retail and leisure units of former Courthouse, Deansgate Manchester, let to Steve Pilling for Mr Pilling's Roast Restaurant & Oyster Bar. Appointed by St Modwen on £50m Hednesford Gateway scheme. Completed three deals on behalf of Boots. Completed six deals on behalf of M&S Simply Foods. Recruited new team member, David Kos, in the professional department

John CosgraveJohn Cosgrave / Managing director / Arley Homes / Warrington. Started the 135-unit Duxbury Manor development at Myles Standish Way in Chorley, the first phase of which has been released for sale. Reported strong sales at The Birches in Charnock Richard, The Meadows in Coppull and Dunham Chase in Altrincham. Completed developments in Fulwood and Cheadle Hulme. Won consent for 21 new homes at Nantwich in Cheshire, 20 new homes on a 1.85 acre site in Heath Charnock, Chorley, and had several offers accepted on other sites in locations set to come online throughout 2012.

Bill DavidsonBill Davidson / Director / Indigo Planning / Manchester. Davidson told Place workloads have picked up considerably over the year, up 20% on 2010, partly on the back of a number of strategic urban extension projects and, more latterly, through work on two major schemes which have funding confirmed though the Regional Growth Fund, Peel's Port Salford and Barnfield's Weavers Triangle in Burnley. The Manchester office has been active across the UK from Kent to Hull. In Cumbria, Indigo secured consent for a cattle auction mart and agricultural retail units at J36 of the M6, freeing up a town centre site for residential development.

Andrew Dickman / Managing Director / Patrick Properties / Manchester. Continues to be active securing a new 42,000 sq ft occupier for its speculative industrial scheme, Premier Park in Northwich. Set to carry out a comprehensive refurbishment of Bow Chambers in Manchester next year.

Anthony DillonAnthony Dillon / Regional managing director / Willmott Dixon / Construction / Oldham. The northern division employs 170 staff and will turn over £150m this year. High profile projects include three large academies in Oldham worth £70m and anew Irish World Heritage Centre in Cheetham Hill, Manchester.

John Downes / Managing director / Langtree / Development / Newton-le-Willows. Another solid year from one of the region's heavyweights, only marred by delays to the opening of the Festival Gardens in Liverpool, forerunner to a major residential scheme on the site of the International Garden Festival of 1984. Completed and indeed took the name of the new ground for St Helens Rugby League Club, now Langtree Park. Langtree is the lead developer in the expansion of Daresbury Science & Innovation Campus and was among the winners of Regional Growth Fund cash from government this year. Langtree has net assets valued at £74m
