Persimmon prevails in Standish homes appeal

Wigan Council’s decision to reject the housebuilder’s plans for 57 homes off Pepper Lane has been overturned.

Persimmon Homes met with refusal a little over a year ago despite securing a recommendation for approval from officers at Wigan Council.

The scheme featured a mix of detached and semi-detached houses, as well as mews and bungalows. Of the 57 proposed, 15 would be designated affordable – four as first homes, four as intermediate homes, and seven as affordable rent.

A slim majority of Wigan Council’s planning committee members took a dim view of the six-acre scheme due to concerns about the impact the residential scheme would have on existing infrastructure including schools and roads. They voted to refuse the plans by seven votes to six, prompting Persimmon to appeal.

Standish Voice, a local campaign group, was a vocal opponent to the scheme. Its formal objection stated that “Standish is full and there is no need for further executive housing”.

However, following the appeal, the Planning Inspectorate has approved the proposals, concluding that the development “would not harm the capacity of infrastructure serving the area”.

Mosaic Town Planning advised Persimmon throughout the planning process and the appeal.

The application’s reference number is A/23/96541/MAJOR on Wigan Council’s planning portal.

How disgusting that a minister who does not know the area is not named overrides the council when no facilities are improved, no additional surgeries or dentists or schools and traffic is shocking
