Persimmon gets permission for 720-home Morton extension

Cumberland Council has green-lit the development of an 81-acre neighbourhood off Wigton Road in Morton.

Persimmon Homes now has consent to proceed with its development of 720 two- to five-bedroom homes, ranging from bungalows and houses to apartments.

In total, Persimmon would offer 436 houses, 68 would be delivered under the housebuilder’s Charles Church brand, while 216 would be affordable house types.

The scheme includes some 32 acres of public open space with allotments, play areas, and a multi-use games area, all to be built.

Andrew Laing, land director, Persimmon Lancashire, said: “This development will provide a range of energy-efficient two- to five-bedroom homes suitable for first-time buyers, families, and downsizers alike.

“We look forward to working with Cumberland Council to deliver these new homes and ensure our investment brings real benefits for the local community.”

A central spine road will serve the neighbourhood, with ancillary streets off it. The road would split the site and provide access to Dalston Road via Grange Drive.

To the site’s west, land has been reserved for an employment area and retail offer, which is to be planned at a later stage.

A legal agreement will ensure £4m is provided to support the local community, including £3m to support local primary education, more than £400,000 for local bus services, and £20,000 to upgrade the McVitie’s roundabout.

Those interested in the application can use the planning reference number 21/0351 on Cumberland Council’s planning portal.
