Omega plots 600-home scheme
Outline plans have been submitted for a 50-acre residential development at Omega South in Warrington, formerly the RAF Burtonwood Airfield.
The application is for a 617-home scheme across four separate parcels of land varying in size from 13.6 acres to 6.7 acres.
Of the total, 317 of the homes had prior planning consent as part of the Omega Warrington masterplan, but an additional 300 units are now being proposed in revisions that will also see plans for offices on the site scrapped.
There is an additional 3.5-acre parcel of land, allocated for mixed use, which has been transferred from a previously accepted application.
The application is the latest stage in the redevelopment of the huge, 575-acre, Omega Warrington site between Manchester and Liverpool, acquired by Royal Bank of Scotland and Miller Homes almost two decades ago. The masterplan divides the site into several zones, some of which have already been developed and others that are earmarked for development as part of this and future planning applications.
A spine road running through the centre of this latest residential scheme will provide access to the houses and connect to the existing road network at Whittle Avenue roundabout, Burtonwood Road roundabout and a new junction that is being created opposite Kingswood Road.
The project team includes Progress as planning consultants, Chetwoods as architect, Place on Earth as landscape architect, and WSP as civil and transport engineer and acoustics consultant.
Two parcels of land to the south of Omega Warrington are being developed by Redrow and Miller Homes, respectively, while a third plot has been acquired by Taylor Wimpey, which is drafting proposals for residential development.

Too near to the motorway? The most northerly house on that scheme is over 1/2 a mile, nearly a kilometre from the motorway. If you look along the M62 from Manchester a lot of residential is significantly closer than that. This is exactly the kind of brownfield site that should be developed for residential and its proximity to the motorway, two railway stations and local amenities makes it ideal.
