NW General Election at a glance

A disastrous night for the Liberal Democrats triggered a change of MP in several North West constituencies as voters swung to Labour and Conservative.

Headlines so far:

  • Labour tally in region goes from 45 MPs in 2010 to 49
  • Conservatives stay on 21 MPs out of 72 in region
  • Liberal Democrats lose four out of six seats held previously, holding only Southport and Westmorland & Lonsdale
  • Labour gain Burnley from Liberal Democrats. Former Labour council leader Julie Cooper becomes MP
  • Conservatives gain Bolton West from Labour
  • Labour gain City of Chester from Conservatives. Majority of just 93 votes, went to two re-counts
  • Labour gain Manchester Withington from Liberal Democrats. Former Manchester City Council housing cabinet member Jeff Smith defeats John Leech with 53% of vote
  • Conservative minister Esther McVey loses Wirral West to Labour's Margaret Greenwood by 417 votes. A -13% swing away from Liberal Democrats
  • Greens second in Liverpool Riverside with 12% of vote; safe Labour seat held by Louise Ellman
  • Hazel Grove a Conservative gain at expense of Liberal Democrats with a 15% swing from the Lib Dems
  • Conservative Mary Robinson gains Cheadle from Lib Dem Mark Hunter
  • Labour gain Lancaster & Fleetwood from Conservatives

Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne increased his majority in Tatton. Speaking to the BBC he said, with the Conservatives facing election victory nationally, he would continue to prioritise boosting the economy of the "great cities of the North as a counterbalance to London".
