Main contractor Collinson Construction has finished building a 9,500 sq ft modular arts and music centre for Morecambe Bay Academy.

The £2.1m project includes classrooms, office space and communal areas for students and teachers, as part of a wider modernisation of the 1930s Lancashire secondary school set to include an extension, replacement of windows, parking upgrades and other elements.

Collinson, which is based in Catterall near Preston, used modular construction methods to build the arts and music centre, meaning most of the structure was factory-made before being delivered to the site and craned into position.

The project team also included Stratus 9 Consulting as surveyor and client representative, and GA Associates as planner.

Rob Duxbury, managing director at Collinson Construction, said: “Our team has delivered a high-quality building in a short space of time, helping the academy to meet one of it’s key objectives of creating inspiring teaching spaces.”

Angela Livesey, director of business and finance at Morecambe Bay Academy, added: “This project is the centrepiece of a much wider transformation project to create 21st century facilities at Morecambe Bay.

“The Arts and Music Centre has provided an exciting and innovative space for student creativity and one that will serve Morecambe children for many generations to come.

Collinson, which was founded in 2004, has completed more than 70 major projects nationally and its clients include Surf Snowdonia, Sport Scotland, Sport Ireland, Warrington Wolves, and Bristol Bears.

The company said it hopes the Morecambe scheme will be a catalyst to build up its pipeline of modular and traditional construction work in Lancashire, in addition to its work elsewhere in the UK.
