New Mersey £60m leisure scheme gets consent
The £60m refurbishment of New Mersey Shopping Park in Speke, to include an 11-screen Cineworld cinema and six restaurants, has been approved by Liverpool City Council.
The plans from Speke Unit Trust, which is part-owned by British Land, would create a new gateway to the retail park, with the cinema and restaurants located at the front of the site replacing the current Currys unit.
Alongside the development of the 45,000 sq ft cinema, the proposals include the reconfiguration of a large B&Q unit to create smaller units, the construction of 12 retail units, a refurbishment of the 30 existing shops, and a reworked car park.
According to a council report on the plans, “the head of planning is satisfied that the scheme will be a valuable and exciting addition to the existing retail park offer that will bring significant benefits to users in terms of facilities, improved movement within the site and an improved physical environment utilising a modern architectural approach.”
Occupiers at New Mersey include Boots, Mothercare, River Island and Argos.
