NEM appoints deputy for Eddie Smith

Steve Thorncroft has been appointed deputy chief executive of New East Manchester, the urban regeneration company, with responsibility for the development division.

Thorncroft, pictured, was formerly managing director of Grapevine Developments which is part of Jackson Holdings Group, and includes residential arm, Lowry Homes. In the late 1990s he was property and construction director of the £120m Lowry project in The Quays, which delivered the arts centre, a bridge across the Manchester Ship Canal, a multi-storey car park and a public plaza and regional water treatment programme.

Thorncroft spent ten years prior to The Lowry as director of operations at the Trafford Park Development Corporation, the special planning and investment vehicle established during the Thatcher era.

Eddie Smith, chief executive of New East Manchester, said: "Steve is a talented individual with a proven track record of delivering major projects. His experience will be vital in leading the development team through an exciting and challenging phase in the regeneration process for east Manchester. Our development programme is ambitious and we need to make the most of the opportunities presented to us as well as creating new ones."

Thorncroft said: "This is a great time to be joining the organisation. Over the past decade New East Manchester has done an exceptional job in building the foundations for the transformation of this important part of the city.

"I look forward to the challenges and opportunities ahead which will bring real benefits to local people."
