MIPIM GALLERY | North of England and Scotland Closing Reception

Property professionals gathered together on Thursday to raise a dram to a week well spent in Cannes, having condensed a year’s worth of meetings into four days.

Sponsored by Woven Whisky Makers, the North of England and Scotland Closing Reception embodied the spirit of MIPIM by connecting the public and private sector for an evening of pressure-free networking to round off the busy week.

You can see photos from the event in the gallery at the bottom of this article.

The North of England and Scotland delegations had represented their communities strongly throughout the property convention, shining a global spotlight on their investment potential through a series of panel sessions, breakfast conferences, and roundtables.

Events had included the UK Leaders Summit – one of the first sessions on the North of England Suite – on Tuesday.

There, Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram, East Midlands Mayor Claire Ward, Glasgow City Council Leader Cllr Susan Aitken, Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett, Liverpool City Council Leader Cllr Liam Robinson, East Riding of Yorkshire Council Leader Cllr Anne Handley, Blackpool Council Leader Cllr Lynn Williams, Manchester City Council chief executive Tom Stannard, and North East Combined Authority made the case for a stronger devolution in the UK and for investment outside of London. Scotland made its triumphant MIPIM return on the UK Stage at its Meet Scotland session on the Tuesday.

Scottish Government director of international trade and investment Richard Rollison, Dundee City Council Leader Cllr Mark Flynn, Glasgow City Council city convener for housing, development, built heritage, and land use Cllr Ruairi Kelly, Edinburgh Development and Investment Forum representative Chris Dougray, and UK Innovation Corridor chair Jackie Sadek highlighted the strength of the Scotland proposition – and why it is too good for the world to ignore. Glad it’s over for another year. Is there really any need to fly everyone over to discuss things in the sunshine with a beer? Are the positive outcomes truly any different to if the event was in the UK?

Imagine how sad your life must be to complain about articles on events discussing new developments on a website which is dedicated to development. If the event was hosted in one UK city, commenters would ask why it wasn’t hosted in their city. If PNW didn’t publish articles on it at all, people would complain that they weren’t doing their job.

Of course Metro Mayors will keep asking for greater devolution (i.e. more cash) t’s in their interest. But it should come with a price of greater accountability for poor delivery as is often the case.
