Meadow Mill renovation receives final consent

The £20m residential conversion of a grade two-listed mill on the edge of Stockport town centre has been granted planning permission.

London-based William George Homes is set to renovate the 175,000 sq ft Meadow Mill into 213 apartments. The proposals were first approved at a meeting of Stockport Council’s central area committee on 13 April, but needed final sign-off at the town’s planning committee on 27 April.

The project will see a mix of apartments within the building, ranging from studios to three bedrooms.

The flats will be for a mix of rent and sale, and are due to be available from 2018.

The seven-storey building on Water Street and Triviot Way was built as a textile mill in 1880. In recent years it has housed a mix of industrial, leisure, retail and office tenants, but remained 65% vacant and parts of the structure have fallen into disrepair.

Under William George’s proposals, the derelict roof would be removed, and replaced with an extension to add an additional storey in height.

In the planning application, the developer said it intends “to create an impressive ‘grand’ residential and commercial premises and landscape commensurate with Meadow Mill’s gateway location.”

CJ Partnership is the architect, and Peter Rowlinson Planning advised on the application.
