Maple Grove gets going on 57,000 sq ft Hattersley retail

To be built by Britcon UK, the 5.5-acre Hattersley Trade Park will include up to eight employment units amounting to 32,000 sq ft, an Aldi, and a drive-thru Costa Coffee.

The employment units ranging from 3,000 sq ft to 6,000 sq ft will be marketed by Knight Frank for commercial use.

Maple Grove Developments, part of Eric Wright Group, lodged plans to Tameside Council to revitalise the 5.5-acre plot, which has stood empty for more than 15 years, in April 2024.

Onward Homes is working in collaboration with Maple Grove to deliver the scheme, found on the corner of Ashworth Lane and Stockport Road in Hattersley.

Contractor Britcon UK has begun work following Aldi’s pre-let agreement for a 19,800 sq ft unit, and is due to finish work in June 2026.

Cllr Eleanor Wills, Leader at Tameside Council, said: “This marks yet another fantastic step in the development of the Hattersley district centre, building on the incredible progress already achieved.

“Through strong partnership and investment, in Hattersley, we’ve brought significant improvements – revitalising and creating new public spaces, bringing much-needed housing and providing valuable community support, as well as for residents and young people.

“It’s great to see the success here, and we want more of this for all our towns across the borough.”

Car parking for up to 179 vehicles, with 16 rapid EV charging points from Be.EV are to be provided.

Hattersley Trade Park is expected to achieve a BREEAM Excellent and EPC A rating.

Andrew Dewhurst, development director at Maple Grove Developments, called the moment “a significant milestone”, adding work has been tailored to “create a true mixed-use development which will benefit the people of Tameside”.

Sandy Livingstone, executive director of property at Onward Homes, added: “Once complete, these new facilities will provide local people with greater choice, as well as improving employment within the wider Hattersley community.”

Others on the project team delivering the retail park include The Harris Partnership, Abacus Cost Management, and ICIS Design.
