Liverpool unveils cultural strategy for next five years
A draft cultural strategy was launched for consultation in Liverpool today by a newly created council body, aiming to build on the city's success as the UK's European Capital of Culture.
The five-year masterplan will be delivered by Liverpool First's Culture Task Group, chaired by Cllr Gary Millar, Liverpool's executive member for enterprise and tourism, following the consultation period.
Further waterfront animation, developing the role of parks in the city and a new public art programme, all form part of the 45-page draft document.
The council said over 70 cultural organisations and networks helped devise the draft strategy. The aim is to make the city a "thriving international city of world status" by 2024.
During a five-year period until 2013, the Culture Task Group will work on five key themes:
- Cultural vibrancy
- Access and participation
- Creative learning and skills development
- Economic growth
- Image, identity and sense of place
The themes are based upon those being monitored by the council's Impacts 08 research model employed throughout this year's festivities.
During the consultation period, the public and stakeholders are invited to provide feedback over the next six weeks, until Friday 31 October. A questionnaire is available at http://www.liverpoolfirst.org.uk/consultations/stakeholder-sept2008
A three-day public event will also be held in Liverpool One and St John's Shopping Centre from 3 to 5 October.
