Lidl advances Fallowfield vision

The discount supermarket chain has lodged an application with Manchester City Council to clear part of Fallowfield Retail Park to pave the way for a 13,500 sq ft food store.

Advised by retained planning consultant Rapleys, Lidl wants to knock down six shop units at the Birchfields Road site.

The total amount of retail space to be demolished is just over 17,000 sq ft and includes units most recently occupied by Barnardo’s, Burger King, Carphone Warehouse, and Jolleys Pet Store.

Hawthorn Medical Centre, which occupies unit nine, would remain at the site under the proposals.

Demolition work is due to commence next month and complete by the end of January, according to planning documents.

Lidl bought the site for an undisclosed sum from CBRE GI.

CBRE retained the northern portion of the 48,000 sq ft Fallowfield Retail Park, occupied by Home Bargains, Iceland.

Elsewhere in Manchester, Lidl operates stores in Harpurhey, Openshaw, Piccadilly, Longsight, Rusholme and Baguley.

In Salford, the retailer adopted a similar approach to that being employed in Fallowfield, acquiring the former Mocha Parade retail complex and demolishing the buildings to make way for a supermarket.
