Langdale Chase to undergo major refurbishment
The Daniel Thwaites-owned hotel, which overlooks Lake Windermere on a six-acre site, will close in April ahead of an extensive refurbishment which will cost between £6m and £15m and could take up to 18 months.
Works on the grade two-listed main house, which was built in 1895, will involve the refurbishment of existing bedrooms, including making one accessible, as well as restoring original features such as the inglenook to the fireplace within the existing piano room.
Various external alterations to the main house include the removal of a Victorian-style conservatory which will be replaced with new glass and bronze clad structure.
The addition of a three-storey, 13-bedroom block is also proposed and will be situated between the main house and the Lakehouse, which will benefit from an additional two bedrooms.
A roof extension to the boathouse, which contains one private bedroom, will provide a larger en-suite bathroom.

A proposed spa would see the alteration and of two existing buildings known as the Carriage House and Staff Block. The Spa contains a new swimming pool at ground floor level and part external hydro pool. At the same level the pool area links with the existing staff block which is reconfigured to provide further guest bedrooms, treatment rooms alongside retained staff bedrooms.
A jetty, for which a planning application was submitted in July last year, and a tearoom form part of the project.
The project team includes Campbell Driver Architects, Rural Solutions on Landscaping and Goff Associates which is designing the interiors. A main contractor is yet to be appointed.
Brewery and hotel operator Thwaites acquired the from Thomas Noblett in August 2017.
Hope it doesn’t loose it’s character it’s a lovely place to stay very peaceful .

I do hope they keep the peace nature and beauty of this unique hotel but with the expansion I guess will lose that… Love the style of the conservatory!! . sounds like it will not be so glass bronze umm . Me and my mum will miss stopping off for lunch and the tranquility and recently stayed overlooking the lake which was so lovely.

No structural changes on the outside of the main building according to manager when I was talking to him, the staff block at the back will look different. The regs and planning are crazy there, it took 8 months and 25k to rebuild the jetty after storm damage!
The inside and rooms do need some work – supposed to be being made a 5 star venue.

As returning guests of more than 30 years we trust that any of its character, charm and values are not lost in this project. We look forward to its reopening.

As a previous frequent visitor from as far back as mid 80’s & the place I got married in 2013 the whole complex holds a significant part of my heart. Let’s hope it’s character does not change too much. I wish them well in the update & the next part of the house’s journey.
As I now live in NZ I’m not likely to get back to it.

I hope some bedrooms have French doors and a lounge you can see the wonderful view from. It’s a shame only the dining room has that view. Good luck.
