Knowsley unanimously approves SEN school

Despite being in the Green Belt, the Roby school was universally backed by the council’s planning committee, and will provide secondary-level education for children with special educational needs.

Specialist education provider Witherslack Group lodged plans for the 60-place SEN school in June.

The company runs the adjacent primary-level SEN Lakeside School on Naylor’s Road, close to Childwall Golf Club.

Working with architect C4 Projects, the applicant has put together a plan to demolish old farm buildings once associated with the former Wheathill Riding School.

The site will then see the development of a secondary school that will house up to 60 pupils. The plans also include a multi-use games area.

The new school would be connected to the existing Lakeside primary school, which has been open since 2001, and has a capacity of 34 pupils.

Witherslack said that the school would allow children to progress beyond primary education in a familiar setting, with a glazed link created to provide direct access between the two schools.

Vicky Size, the executive headteacher of both the primary and secondary schools, said that there is demand for an SEN secondary school and that it will be of “great benefit to the children and the wider area”.

Cllr Ken McGlashen said the borough was in “dire need” of more special educational needs school spaces.

“This is a welcome addition to our educational needs in the borough,” he said.

Cushman & Wakefield is the planning consultant for the project.
