Kenji latest to open at Liverpool One

The Japanese-inspired lifestyle retailer has opened a 1,500 sq ft store on South John Street, in a unit previously occupied by The Artisanal Spirits & Beer Emporium, becoming the latest Liverpool One tenant since lockdown.

The store is Kenji’s first in Liverpool but the company also has stores in Manchester, Preston, Bury and Warrington, as well as a recently opened store at Sheffield’s Meadowhall shopping centre.

Kenji’s Liverpool launch follows the opening of toy store Hamleys in the 2,000 sq ft former Cath Kidson unit on Paradise Street, as well as that of a clothing concept retailer from former Liverpool FC captain Steven Gerrard, called SGG Apparel.

Jeweller David M Robinson has also agreed to lease its South John Street unit for another five years. And, in May, Asian street food chain Maggie Foo agreed to take 4,700 sq ft at Liverpool One.

Grosvenor, Liverpool One’s owner, reported in September that footfall and sales stood at 86% and 88% of 2019 levels for that month.

Alison Clegg, director of asset management at Grosvenor Europe, said: “More than ever before, it is important for retail be forward thinking and experience-led. Kenji’s launch adds to the consistent growth of Liverpool One as a destination of choice for brands.”

Derek Yong, head of operations at Kenji, added: “The aim to disrupt the way retail is traditionally experienced is by curating an immersive retail space of Japanese-inspired designer homeware, toys and stationery, allowing customers to explore not just the products but the story behind them, also, bringing back the excitement to shopping.”

Metis and CBRE acted for Liverpool One as lettings agents, and KJ Retail Consultancy represented Kenji.

I give it a year

A superlative open air retail experience. I think we can so often take Liverpool ONE for granted and forget just how lucky we are. Kenji is another store who will feel at home here.

Welcome toLiverpool.

Must be at least 10 years since Liverpool One opened , and though times are difficult at present in the retail world things will improve , I would therefore like to think that Grosvenor are considering purchasing the soon to be vacant Police headquarters on the Strand with a view to redeveloping this land with hotels, food terraces and shops.
