J. Freeley to raze Wallasey Town Hall annexes
Starting today, the demolition contractor will be on site at the South Annexe, with ambitions to tackle the North Annexe soon after.
Worsley-based J. Freeley estimates that destroying the two annexes of the grade two star-listed Wallasey Town Hall will take 20 weeks.
Wirral Council signed off the demolition last year. With the two blocks off Brighton Street out of the way, the local authority will be able to proceed with its masterplan to regenerate Seacombe. The council has already earmarked the site for 149 homes.
Both annexes have been empty since March 2020.
“The demolition of these two buildings which are ugly, unneeded, and no longer fit for purpose, is just a first step in the plans to bring real and much-needed regeneration in Seacombe,” said Wirral Council Leader Cllr Paul Stuart.
“The regeneration program will bring social and economic regeneration along the Seacombe River Corridor and attract new investment into the area,” he continued.
“The demolition of these buildings and redevelopment of the sites will not only have a huge impact in Seacombe but will demonstrate the opportunities that are possible and within our grasp.”
Funding for the demolition of the annexes comes from a £2.3m grant from the government’s Brownfield Land Release Fund.
It about time these buildings are an eyesore

In what world are these classic modernist buildings ugly? Has he seen the rest of Seacombe?

Not the greatest buildings but could be converted into flats, the concern is what quality of design will the replacement residential properties attain, hopefully not consist of low rise, suburban semis.

Shame. Covid not only killed people, but buildings too. Nothing wrong with them except the reported asbestos used in building them.
