Interserve selected for new St Helens College

Interserve has been selected as preferred bidder for the construction of the new £45m St Helens College.

The scheme designed by Cheshire-based Ellis Williams Architects involves demolition of the existing buildings and construction of a new town centre campus.

The redevelopment includes science labs, fitness suites, dining areas and a landscaped public realm totaling 185 000 sq ft. The landmark 'clocktower' building, home of the St Helens Business School, will be retained as an integral part of the campus.

Adrian Ringrose, chief executive of Interserve, said, "This is a prime example of how we are able to work with the local community to provide new facilities that they will be proud to use. We have a solid track record in the education sector and this project consolidates our position as a leading constructor of education establishments."

Welcoming the redevelopment, Pat Bacon, principal of St Helens College, said: "This new development will be an inspiration to students and staff alike. The use of open spaces incorporated into its design will also help to make the town centre a safer place. As a responsive college, rooted in the community, we are keen to involve local people in the project and are currently consulting with stakeholders, community groups and the local business community."

The college was founded in 1896 and is a major provider of further and higher education in the region, employing over 800 staff and providing full- and part-time courses for around around 25,000 students, adults and school leavers.

The first building work is scheduled to commence in February 2008 with the project anticipated being completed by 2011.
