Krol Corlett wins Birkenhead Market contract
Wirral Council has awarded the Knowsley-based company a £610,800 pre-construction services agreement to line up the trading hall’s move to the former TJ Hughes building.
Krol Corlett was one of five companies invited to bid on the contract, and “offered the most comprehensive programme of work and most advantageous tender” of the three that applied, according to a council report.
Under the PCAS contract, Krol Corlett will help craft the design of the market and conduct enabling works. It is expected that the contractor will then go on to be awarded the main contract for the £3.5m refurbishment and fit-out of the space.
Regarding the appointment, Krol Corlett managing director Daniel Tebay said: “This is a cornerstone project for the ongoing transformation of Birkenhead town centre and, as a Wirral resident, I know how important the market is to Birkonians.
“We’re midway through the transformation of the market hall in Accrington and appreciate exactly what stallholders and the public want from such a key asset,” he continued.
“Our skilled local tradespeople will ensure the very best workmanship and I’m looking forward to bringing my family along to enjoy the new market when it opens.”
Wirral Council Leader Cllr Paula Basnett spoke about the significance of the project.
“The new market will play an important role in the future of Birkenhead town centre so we want to see a destination which builds on the very best of what we have already and creates an attractive and welcoming place to visit and shop in,” she said.

In addition to Krol Corlett, the project team for the market includes BDP and Turner & Townsend.

Can’t swing a cat in one project team office in the region and the other doesn’t even have one. At least Krol will give some social value back. The designer and PM won’t be employing graduates or apprentices from Wirral anytime soon.

Wirral Council continuing to throw more money into a black hole because nobody in their dysfunctional No Overall Control council ever wants to take responsibility for taking a decision that might be even a bit unpopular.
Birkenhead Market died years ago when it was in private ownership, and before Wirral Council went entirely downhill it did everything it could to try and revive it. The customers voted with their feet long before the rest of the town centre declined, and any replacement of the market will continue to need large subsidies to keep it going.
It makes much more sense to support the few remaining traders into some of the very many vacant shop units the council owns so they can stand on their own feet.

Surely it must be cheaper to update the original market. It is a nice building inside and out. What will happen to it? Another empty building. The old T J Hughes building is not going to look like a market. Another mistake by Wirral Council. Sorry but it’s true.
