Harworth plans 2022 start for Little Lever scheme

The 132-house development in the Bolton town has secured planning permission from the council but has been referred to the Secretary of State.

Harworth Group is finalising site preparation works on the 15-acre tract of land adjacent to Stopes Road. Previously, the area was used to manufacture and store concrete blocks by Tarmac. Harworth purchased the land in 2020. Already, Harworth has removed the majority of the machinery and manufacturing infrastructure that was on it.

“Our plans for the Little Lever site will transform this former Tarmac concrete plant into a thriving new community, bringing additional housing, jobs and investment to the local area,” said Steven Knowles, regional director for the North West at Harworth. “The development will provide residents with extensive green space and landscaping features to enhance biodiversity, alongside improvements to road and footpath access. We look forward to working with local stakeholders to bring these exciting plans forward.”

Harworth plans to begin construction on the residential scheme in the first half of 2022.

However, construction could still be delayed. Part of the land involved in the development is Green Belt, so the scheme has been referred to the Secretary of State who now has to decide whether or not to call it in.

The planning application for the Little Lever project was developed with help from Astle Planning, Satplan, and Design in Chester.
