Green light for Hoylake Town Hall redevelopment

Wirral Council has approved plans by Hylgar Properties to convert the former Hoylake Town Hall building into a cinema, cafe, restaurant, creative offices and studio spaces.

In a project designed by Falconer Chester Hall, the Edwardian building will be linked via a glazed atrium to a new build five-story building that will house 40 apartments in its upper floors and 17 or 18 “makers units” in 6,000 sq ft at ground floor level.

Adam Hall, managing director of FCH, said: “This is a genuinely innovative and welcome scheme which reinvigorates a local landmark building into a variety of creative uses and helps meet the demand for good quality accommodation in the area. It will also bring new jobs and investment.”

Hylgar is registered with Companies House at Town Hall Chambers, Hoylake as a micro-entity.

The development has been welcomed by Hoylake Conservation Area, which described the project as “imaginative and sympathetic” at what is a key site, sitting opposite Hoylake railway station.

The project has been driven forward for several years by the Beacon Steering Group, using the name Beacon Arts Village, and has attracted support from residents, local MPs and Wirral Chamber of Commerce, against a handful of objections. Previously, plans were put forward for a community cinema at the town’s Lifeboat Museum.

Hall added: “The town hall is well regarded locally so it’s important the new building respects both this and other adjacent buildings with a design that references the historical context but with a modern, refreshing feel.”
