Wirral advances plans for Woodside Bus Interchange

A children’s play area with pirate ship, sky twister swings, and inclusive multi seesaw would take over the northern part of the transport hub under the council’s plans to rejuvenate Birkenhead’s waterfront.

Wirral Council has applied to relocate the bus interchange to the southern part of the half-acre site between Chester Street and Woodside Ferry Terminal. The northern half would be transformed into a dynamic playground. The plans also include the planning of 34 new trees, shrubs, and ferns.

The play area is part of Wirral Council’s £20m proposals for Woodside, which also include a refreshed Battle of the Atlantic attraction and a ferry pontoon. All three elements are due to open in spring 2028.

The project team for the play area include Hive Land & Planning, Pell Frischmann, BCA Landscape, and Lanpro Services. You can learn more about the proposal by using reference DPP4/26/01549 on Wirral Council’s planning portal.
