APG proposes Birkenhead cinema-to-resi conversion

The Gaumont Cinema off Park Road is to be brought back into use as apartments under plans lodged by the Merseyside-based developer.

APG Birkenhead, a vehicle controlled by APG Capital, wants to convert the former cinema and extend it to deliver 25 one- and two-bed apartments.

The development would see the cinema’s rear auditorium demolished while the three-storey frontage of the 1930s building would be retained.

The building ceased operating as a cinema in 1964 and has been a snooker hall, bingo hall, roller rink, and, most recently, a furniture store.

WD Architects is advising the applicant on the proposals. To learn more search for reference number APP/26/01336 on Wirral Council’s planning portal.

In 2020, it was reported that Southport-based developer 79th Homes had acquired the Art Deco cinema and was planning to convert it into up to 30 apartments.

Those plans never progressed and 79th Group is now the subject of a police investigation.
