Graham picked for £50m nuclear waste framework

Nuclear Waste Services has appointed the builder on a four-year contract to deliver a range of site infrastructure for the Low-Level Waste Repository in Cumbria, which safely stores nuclear by-products.

Graham will be charged with replacing or upgrading ageing infrastructure, demolition and remediation, as well as installing and commissioning new systems at the repository.

Valued at £50m, the contract begins this month and is known as the Integrated Site Works Frameworks – after infrastructure work, Graham will stay on board to support future operations at the site.

The Low-Level Waste Repository stores radioactive waste from Sellafield, universities, the military, pharmaceuticals, and hospitals.

It is currently the only facility in the UK that can receive all categories of low-level waste.

In 2016, planning permission was granted to allow Graham’s appointment to deliver the Southern Trench Cap Interim Membrane, which involves placing a protective layer over legacy disposal trenches.

The Low-Level Waste Repository became part of Nuclear Waste Services in January 2022.
