FWP engaged on Carlisle Cathedral project
Frank Whittle Partnership has been appointed as project manager and quantity surveyor on a £3.4m restoration and extension programme at Carlisle Cathedral’s Fratry Building.
The scheme has been enabled by a Heritage Lottery Fund grant of close to £2m and £1.5m in partner funding raised by the cathedral from supporters and sponsors
The Fratry project will redevelop and extend the cathedral’s existing grade 1-listed Fratry, which was constructed in the 1500s as a monastery refectory and currently houses a collection of 17th and 18th century books.
The extension, which has been designed by architect Feilden Fowles, has received planning approval and work on site is due to start early in 2018, with completion by summer 2019.
The project also includes essential conservation work to the roof and stonework of the Fratry building, and will aim to better connect facilities within the cathedral.
The extension includes a space for hospitality and catering, and a learning space will be created in the mediaeval stone-vaulted Fratry Undercroft for use by schools and other community groups. The cathedral itself dates back to the 12th century.
Other HLF-supported projects FWP, which has offices in Preston and Manchester, is involved in include work on the historic Walton Hall Estate near Warrington, where a £2m grant was awarded earlier this year, and the £4m Rivington Terraced Gardens restoration in Lancashire.
FWP partner Kate Shuttleworth said: “The Fratry project has been called the most significant physical intervention on the site for more than 150 years and will bring the building, constructed in the 1500s, back to life as a centre of cultural and community life in the heart of the city.”
