Ex-Unilever chemical plant to be demolished

Warrington Council has signed off an application to demolish the 11 structures that make up the plant, which sits at 2 Liverpool Road.

Applicant Ecovyst Catalyst Technologies wants to demolish the former Unilever chemical manufacturing facility, as the building is no longer operational. Ecovyst told Warrington Council that the plant was at risk of falling into disrepair and that by demolishing it now Ecovyst could remove the potential for asset deterioration.

According to the application form, contractor KDC could begin demolition as early as 12 December.

The demolition will result in approximately 35,600 tonnes of waste, according to a site waste management plan. That same plan estimates that 99.4% of the waste will ultimately be recycled, with the remaining going to the landfill.

Lichfields was the planning consultant for the project. The project team also includes RPS and CampbellReith.

The application’s reference number with Warrington Council is 2022/42628.
