Craft beer and cocktail bar planned for Swan Street

A planning application to change a basement at Manchester’s Swan Building into a craft beer bar and events space, featuring beers from local brewer Shindigger, has been submitted to the city council.

Cable Events plans to turn the 8,200 sq ft space at 20 Swan Street into a bar with beers supplied by Shindigger, which is based in the adjacent building, alongside areas to host events including art exhibitions, classes, markets, and live music.

The space, currently vacant, was last used as a place of worship by Manchester Chinese Christian Church. The ground floors and upper floors of the five-storey building are use as office space.

Access to the proposed bar and events space would be via Swan Street and next to Shindigger Brewery on Cable Street. Original features including cast-iron columns would be retained during the fit-out.

Proposed opening hours are between 12:00 and 23:00 Sunday to Thursday, and 12:00 to 03:00 on Friday and Saturday. Paul Butler Associates is planner for the scheme.

The Swan Building, dating to 1888, sits opposite Band on the Wall and is near a number of the Northern Quarter’s bars and restaurants including the Mackie Mayor food market and the Smithfield Tavern.

It backs on to Cable Street and the proposed site of a nine-storey 224-bedroom aparthotel, due to be operated by StayCity. Plans for the SimpsonHaugh-designed building were submitted in November, backed by developer Catalyst Capital.
