Copeland approves 90 Whitehaven homes

Developer Site Evolution can move forward with its plans for a neighbourhood on the site of Harras Dyke Farm now that planning permission has been secured.

The project was spread out over two applications, both of which were approved at Copeland Council’s planning committee meeting on 28 September. The decision was done in accordance with officer recommendation.

The site already had outline permission for up to 110 homes from August 2017, so the approval of the reserved matters applications was not a surprise.

Designs by Penrith-based Manning Elliot Partnership call for a mixture of detached, semi-detached, and terraced houses with between two and five bedrooms. Some of the homes would have integral garages, others would have detached ones, and others still would just have off-street parking.

Under the plans submitted by SRE Associates, the neighbourhood would consist of 13 different house types spread across three distinct character areas.

These character areas are:

  • The Green and The Avenue: an area of formal tree planting and hoop-top railings between front gardens
  • The Edge: a more casual and informal area with native planting and front gardens separated by native hedging
  • Contemporary: an area featuring open-plan landscaping

Access to the scheme would be from Harras Road, which would be improved as part of the plans going forward.

Affordable housing in the development will be addressed at a later stage, according to planning documents.

The application reference numbers for the project with Copeland Council are 4/21/2195/0R1 and 4/21/2196/0R1.
