Construction milestone hit at Copperas Hill

Morgan Sindall Construction has topped out the five-storey Student Life Building at Liverpool John Moores University’s development in the city centre.

When complete, the building will house an advice and wellbeing centre, careers advice services, international exchanges, study areas, the Student’s Union, and teaching spaces.

This is one of two buildings to be built on the site of a former Post Office on Copperas Hill. The second is a two-storey Sports Building which will house an eight-court sports hall, two multi-purpose halls and a state-of-the-art gym.

The 3.5-acre project is due for overall completion in 2020. The scheme was brought forward by a Faithful + Gould led multidisciplinary team, including architect Sheppard Robson.

Richard Potts, Morgan Sindall Construction’s area director for Liverpool, said: “Reaching this milestone is a great opportunity to celebrate the progress that’s been made on this project, which is a landmark development not only for the University but for the city as a whole.”

LJMU’s interim vice-chancellor and chief executive, Mark Power, said: “The development is bringing wider benefits to the city by regenerating a key gateway site and creating attractive open spaces.”

The project was procured through Pagabo Major Works framework.

Er…behind schedule and extremely slow progress on site, I’m afraid.

As a doctoral researcher at LJMU I had my doubts about placing this contract with a Tier 2 contractor like Sindall.
