Co-op HQ build hits weather delays
The construction of the Co-operative Group's new headquarters in Manchester's Miller Street has slipped behind schedule due to the severe weather in recent months but will catch-up during the remainder of the build programme, the company said.
Lead contractor BAM Construction has had fewer days than expected available to pour concrete due to the sub-zero temperatures. The Co-operative Group said today: "The exceptionally bad weather before Christmas has severely hampered construction projects across the UK and our new head office project is no different.
"Concreting activities to the main structure have fallen behind as a result of the worst weather period since records began but we are working closely with all involved and will endeavour to ensure that the overall project will recover from this unfortunate setback over the coming months and will be completed on schedule."
The 16-storey building, pictured, designed by 3DReid, will total more than 325,000 sq ft and is due for completion in August 2012.
Meanwhile, at the nearby Chetham's School of Music extension, design by Stephenson Bell, contractor Sir Robert McAlpine is on schedule due to intensive pouring when temperatures rose above zero, in one instance delivering 72 lorry loads in one day at the end of last year. The £36m, 100,000 sq ft building is due for completion in the first quarter of 2012.
