Cheetham Hill Construction MD steps down
Howard Chamberlain, who founded the civil engineering and equipment rentals company 60 years ago, will continue as a director, with current contracts director Mike Goodier taking over the head leadership role.
The change in managing director follows Cheetham Hill Construction’s transition to an employee-owned company. As such, all of the company shares are now being held by a trust to benefit its current and future staff.
“There has always been talk about what the future of CHC would look like when the time came for me to take a step back,” Chamberlain said.
“The reality is this, the business has never been about one person,” he continued.
“Our success has always been a team effort, and this move is about recognising that. I’m proud that this structure gives everyone a stake in our future and helps ensure CHC remains an independent, thriving business for years to come.”
CHC is based out of Bury and operates throughout the North West and Yorkshire with its civil engineering arm. Its plant hire business is nationwide, with the company boasting a stock of a hundred Volvo and Caterpillar machines.
The company turned over £18.8m in the financial year ending 31 July 2024 – the latest reported figures. This year, it is on track for £25m in turnover.
Accountant Beever and Struthers advised CHC in its move to employee ownership. Brabners’ specialist EOT team provided legal advice.
“Employee ownership is a powerful and increasingly popular succession solution for businesses that want to preserve their legacy, reward their people, and retain independence,” said Dean Curtis, corporate finance partner at Beever and Struthers.
“We’re delighted to have supported CHC on this landmark transition,” he continued. “CHC is a fantastic example of a well-run, family business with a strong culture, and the EOT structure ensures those strengths will continue long into the future.”
Stephen Hadlow, partner at Brabners, added: “With significant experience advising on EOTs and succession strategies, we understand just how transformative this step can be — not just for the business, but for the people within it.
“CHC’s transition will help secure its independence, preserve its ethos, and empower its employees as co-owners to drive further success.”
