BSC gets go-ahead for Salford towers

BSC Group's plans for a mixed-use project rising to 47 storeys in Salford's Greengate area have been approved by Salford City Council.

Two residential towers, set to be Salford's tallest at 31 and 47 storeys high and containing 403 apartments, will dominate the Canopus scheme.

The £180m project, funded by Anglo Irish Bank, will also contain a low-rise five star hotel with 230 beds as well as a new public square and urban park.

Completing the development, just across the River Irwell from the Tempus tower, will be 85,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space including cafes, bars, restaurants and a crèche. A 341 space car park will be provided on the scheme, on four underground levels.

Bashar Issa, BSC chief executive, said: "We are enormously excited about the decision to approve this project, which will be our flagship scheme in the city. We're now looking forward to adding to the new high rise quarter that's developing around the River Irwell, with a scheme that is impressive in both scale and quality."

John Lee of architect Arca added: "The word 'landmark' is perhaps used too freely, but in this case the scale of this project will truly mark the revitalisation of Central Salford."

In June, Ask Developments won planning consent for a 1.5m sq ft mixed-use scheme with retail, leisure and office uses at Exchange Greengate, next to Canopus.
