As Nature Intended picks K2 for flagship store

The organic food and beauty products retailer founded by Iceland boss Malcolm Walker and now run by his daughter, has appointed Liverpool-based K2 Architects to design a new flagship store at Marble Arch House, Edgware Road in London.

ANI specialises in organic, locally sourced food, including free from allergens as well as superfoods and natural health & beauty products. The business was established in 2000 by Malcolm Walker, Iceland founder and chief executive. Caroline Gooding, Walker’s daughter, took over the business two years later and in 2010, Jeff Martin was appointed managing director. Gooding had previously worked for Marks & Spencer and Waitrose. ANI now has five stores, all in London.

K2 Architects has worked on three of the stores; Westfield Stratford City (2011), identified by Westfield Centre Management Team as one of their top 10 exemplar designs, Shoreditch at Spitalfields (2014), a concept awarded ‘Best New Food Shop’ by the Londonist publication and now at Marble Arch House.

K2 Architects’ track record in retail and city centre regeneration includes Trinity Kitchen, Leeds for Land Securities, the Grosvenor Shopping Centre, Northampton for L&G and Liverpool ONE for Grosvenor Estates.

Mark Davies, architect director, said: “Working with Jeff and Caroline is seamless, they completely understand their brand and business model as an independent retailer in London and give us freedom to express their stores as unique entities that respond to place and people. ANI are gathering momentum as a business and are creative as they are entrepreneurial and we look forward to delivering this evolving concept at Marble Arch House.”

Jeff Martin, ANI managing director, said: “K2 Architects are an amazingly creative firm to work with. They have brought distinctive unique design concepts to each of the three stores, understanding our vision and the local market of each site. They work hard to deliver exactly what we are looking for and welcome feedback and engagement to ensure this. Each store has been an evolution from the last and Marble Arch will be an amazing store when completed.”

The project is due for completion by autumn 2015. Marble Arch House is a development by British Land, the Portland Estate is the freeholder.
