Aldi proposes £9m Upton store
A consultation has been launched over the retailer’s plans to build a 21,600 sq ft supermarket at Champions Business Park.
Aldi proposes to build the supermarket on a vacant brownfield site on the corner of the junction of Arrowe Brook Road and Arrowe Park Road.
The Harris Partnership is working with Aldi to deliver the £9m investment, which could bring 40 jobs to the area.
A consultation will to 23 September.
Stephen Jones, real estate manager for Aldi, said the site is well-located and easily accessible, noting its access to the A551.
“We’d like to encourage all those in the local area to let us know what they think about our plans, and we look forward to working with residents and stakeholders to deliver a new Aldi food store for the area”, he said.
Plans propose 128 car parking spaces, with at least 10 offering EV charging points.
Currently, the nearest Aldi sites to Upton are in Morton and Prenton, both more than three km away.
Since launching the scheme, some residents have suggested that the scheme could be built on the site of a nearby Homebase.
A spokesperson for Aldi, said: “Since Tuesday, we’ve already received a strong level of support, for which we are very grateful. However, we are aware of some confusion around why we haven’t chosen the former Homebase site for our scheme.
“Unfortunately, there is a restriction on the use of the Homebase unit for food retail, meaning it was not an option we were able to consider.”
Aldi’s plans have yet to be validated on Wirral Council’s planning portal.

The information here and in the public consultation is deceptive. The site is NOT vacant. There are several well established businesses there, which would all be displaced. The public consultation is based on a lie!

I think it’s a great idea. Love to have a local shop.
The location is best yet. I do need to raise I slight flag. I don’t do football at Arrowe park however hundreds do and that area is awful for parking when they are playing.

I think it’s a great addition to the village that is vast reducing in its shopping capabilities. Sainsburys has been consistent with its price matching and prices but it can’t compete for the weekly shop prices and cheaper, exact versions of well named brands that Aldi has to offer. Can’t wait ☺️

The traffic management must be of a very high standard, to make sure the traffic flow is as good as it is now or better before condition starts, particularly at peak time.

We live in Greasby Village and are in our 60s we don’t drive. We rely on the buses to get round. The only bus that goes that way is 81 to Arrowe park hospital. The nearest bus stop is a distance away. Will the bus stop be brought closer to store or not ?

This would be very welcome to surrounding residents. At present the only easily accessible supermarket is Sainsbury’s, which is very good but a bit expensive when its the only choice I have nearby
