GIA launches flood risk and drainage service line

Robert Bramwell-Carr has been brought on to lead the multi-disciplinary consultancy’s latest offering, joining from Tetra Tech.

As director and head of flood risk management and drainage at GIA, Bramwell-Carr is based at the company’s Manchester office.

He is charged with both growing the firm’s expertise in the sector as well as aiding clients with flood risk management, sustainable drainage, wastewater resilience, climate adaptation, and blue-green infrastructure.

Bramwell-Carr has more than 20 years of experience in flood risk and has worked at the Environment Agency and WSP. At Tetra Tech he was the head of the company’s national flood risk management team.

GIA’s flood risk service is only a few weeks old and has already secured several commissions, including one for a high-rise development Leeds, the company said.

With the creation of the flood risk and drainage division, the number of services GIA offers has reached seven. The firm’s 130-strong staff also have expertise in climate and resilience, measured surveys, party wall, building surveying, wind, rights of light, and daylight and sunlight.

Sam Wallis, chief executive of GIA, welcomed Bramwell-Carr’s appointment.

“Early assessment of risk is critical to successful development, and that is as true for flood risk and drainage as it is for the other services we provide,” Wallis said.

“Understanding these considerations at the masterplanning stage, and carrying them through to detailed design, enables better decisions, reduces project risk and helps unlock opportunities,” he continued.

“Robert’s expertise is a natural complement to our existing offer and further strengthens the holistic pre-planning support network we provide to clients. His experience will help us deliver even greater value as we support developers, investors and infrastructure providers in creating resilient, sustainable places for the future.”

Recent GIA projects to make headlines in the North West include Trafford Council and Bruntwood’s redevelopment of Stretford Mall, Forshaw’s VIVERE Cornbrook, and Fusion Students’ PBSA skyscraper in Manchester.
