Tameside advances Hyde transformation
Bringing Hyde Town Hall back into use, redeveloping Clarendon Shopping Centre, and improving the town’s market all feature in the council’s vision.
Hyde, like many other towns, has suffered a “decline of vitality and viability” due to declining footfall, a report to Tameside Council’s executive cabinet states.
Hemingway Design and GL Hearn have drawn up a masterplan outlining a series of interventions aimed at revitalising the town by changing the retail-led environment to one underpinned by food and drink, leisure, and culture.
A month-long consultation on the masterplan will be held at the end of May, following the local elections.
The masterplan “will provide the catalyst that will get the town centre back to its former glory”, the document states.
The proposals include the relocation of the existing market from Market Square to Market Place within a purpose-built facility as part of the redeveloped shopping centre, which was recently acquired by Martin Property Group.
The current site of the market would become “a flexible, high-quality public realm environment suitable, for markets and events”, the masterplan states.
In addition, the town hall could be re-purposed to be a “vibrant cultural hub” for Hyde, according to the plan.
Proposals to pedestrianise key routes in the town centre, including Market Street, also feature in the masterplan.
If approved following the consultation, the masterplan, aimed at guiding future development in Hyde, could be adopted later this year.
