Bardsley Construction in administration
Tameside-based Bardsley Construction is in administration, making more than 200 staff redundant.
Bardsley was established in the 1960s and has a head office in Dukinfield, and is on site with projects across the North West and Yorkshire.
Steven Muncaster and Stephen Clancy, both of Duff & Phelps, have been appointed joint administrator of Bardsley Group Limited, Bardsley Construction Limited and Bardsley Construction Holdings Limited
According to Bardsley’s last set of accounts, published in May 2018 for the year ending December 2017, the company has 184 staff, with a turnover of £68.3m, and a pre-tax profit of £1.1m.
Active directors for the company are Emma Allsopp, Jonathan Cocker, Sean Kempley, Michael Nevitt, Ged Rooney, Adrian Rooney, Paul Strutt and Neil Taylor.
According to a statement from the administrators: “The Group has experienced challenging market conditions including the timely delivery of a number of recent projects, resource issues within the sector, contractual disputes with private clients together with new work opportunities being delayed as a result of the uncertainty in the economic and political environment.”
Muncaster said: “We were formally engaged in November 2019 to advise the Group on its current financial position and to facilitate an accelerated merger and acquisition process or seek immediate investment to tide the Group over into 2020 when a number of new orders are expected to come online. Despite a number of expressions of interest no acceptable formal offers have been made for the Group, leaving the directors with no option but to appoint administrators.
“The Companies normally shut down over the Christmas period and as such this timing will enable us to undertake a further review of the financial position of the Group while marketing the business and assets for sale. We will be working solidly over the holiday period to facilitate this.”
The joint administrators said they were looking at a sale of the business and assets of the companies as a going concern in the first instance.
Bardsley has active schemes across the residential, education and commercial sectors.
Projects currently on site in Manchester include the 12-storey Mount Yard residential project at MeadowSide for FEC, set to complete in summer 2020, and the £30m Blossom Street PRS project for Mulbury, due to be handed over early in the New Year.
Bardsley recently completed the redevelopment of Riverside House in Salford for Muse, and last month was announced as the winner of a £11m contract for Tameside College in Ashton-under-Lyne,
The contractor is also on site with a StayCity hotel on behalf of Catalyst Capital at Manchester’s Mason Street.
Shame, they’re nice guys

Really shocked.
Had a short spell at Bardsley a couple of years ago.
Paul Strutt and Ged Rooney were two very switched-on guys.
Really sorry for all affected.

Borrowing money short for profits long is always a gamble. Okay for a pop-up business with pop-up managers and owners with limited (absolutely no) liability; but no way to run a dependable trustworthy long-term business

Sad times as another Tier 2 contractor in the region goes

Such a shame, worked there for many years, and saw many of the best and brightest come and go over the years.

A really sad day for the industry and for the Manchester region. Another good company being taken down through no fault of their own.
Wishing all the staff a speedy re-employment.

Very sad news today, regarding Bardsley Construction. From all the staff at J.B.A. Globe Scaffolding Hire Ltd, Dukinfield. We have been their neighbours for over 40 years.
Another local construction lost. Let hope something can be salvaged

Sad news for a good reputable Contractor that I enjoyed working with.

Real shame this, some great people in that business who undertake their work in the right manner and behave in a transparent way, lacking of many others in the sector. Keep your heads up guys and I’m sure you will all find employment in the near future.

Sorry to hear about Bardsleys some very good people there

I’m not sure what has to happen before these multidisciplinary contractors work out that they can neither price or programme these residential scheme correctly. Forrest, Pochin and now Bardsley.
Hope staff get sorted with work in the new year

My daughter started at Bardsley Construction as an apprentice joiner in September and was placed on the Blossom Street project, she thoroughly enjoyed working with all the guys on site and is heartbroken over what has happened. I thank them for giving her the opportunity to pursue a career in construction and wish them all luck for the future.

Tragedy. Look what they have delivered. Head turning schemes and tidy sites. Hope there is a buyer. Something wrong with the industry?

It’s devastating when these things happen – affects so many people – young, old, time served, new to the industry. The construction industry shouldnt be about greed and advosary – it should be about quality and honesty which was in Bardsley’s DNA. All the more reason why this should send shock waves through the sector and learn lessons for the future.

What did you mean by that construction in Birmingham to the UK

Not good
Thinking of you all at this time

There’s something wrong with the system when reputable, decent family companies go. So many recently. The tender market is a race to the bottom. Everything has to be built quicker and cheaper. No room for quality. There’ll be no Tier 2 firms left soon

So sad, no holiday pay for the staff I’d guess. Had that once myself, not nice for any family.
