£37m for Blackburn HMRI

Up to £37m could be available over the next three years to continue Blackburn with Darwen council's programme of housing market renewal initiative.

The £37m HMRI funding has been provisionally allocated to Blackburn with Darwen for the next three years and will complement the £49.9m already invested between 2004 and 2008.

This year, a total of £12.7m has been allocated, of which £3.4m will be spent on refurbishing 178 homes in the borough.

Homes on Accrington Road, Queens Park Road and Rockliffe Street in Infirmary are some of the first to benefit. Properties are also being refurbished on Johnston Street, Downham Street, Preston New Road and Chatburn Street in Bank Top.

A further 48 homes will also benefit from refurbishment work in the St Peters Conservation area of Darwen. This will include properties on South Street, Entwistle Street and Church Terrace.

Many of these homes will see improvements such as stone cleaning and pointing to the fronts of the homes, front boundary walls will be rebuilt and residents will be offered new front doors and wooden sliding sash windows.

The council has been carrying out projects including refurbishment and replacement of unfit homes with new housing in Bank Top, Audley, Queen's Park and the Infirmary areas in Blackburn and St Peter's and Queen Street in Darwen since 2004.
