£10m Northgate Arena job up for grabs

Cheshire West and Chester Council wants to appoint a contractor to carry out the latest phase of refurbishment work at the Victoria Road leisure centre.

Northgate Arena’s café and reception areas were upgraded in 2021 and attention has now turned to the rest of the building.

Biro Leisure, which operates Northgate Arena, and the council are planning to award a £10m contract for an overhaul of the centre’s fitness and pool facilities.

The scheme would feature a new changing village, gym, and several new studio spaces. The pool will also be upgraded as part of the £10m project, with a new flume planned.

A spa area featuring a sauna and steam room is also planned.

In addition, upgrades will be made to the facility’s pool filtration, drainage, heating and cooling, ventilation, security, fire safety and audio-visual systems.

Ellis Williams is the architect on the scheme and Ramboll is the civil, structural and ME engineer. Currie & Brown SPL Fire Engineering, and KOK Surveyors are also advising the council and Biro on the scheme.

The pool changing facilities are in a desperate state and need refurbishing asap. There needs to be more private changing cubicles, and showers especially for Sen children/adults. Currently they are dirty, open, cold and mixes of sexes of children there are not enough rooms for disabled and families. Hairdryers should not have a charge. Many people do not have cash.

could a new leisure centre not be built on the forum for £10m, and the council sell of the northgate for residential to achieve a capital receipt to help fund the new leisuire centre at forum. A leisure centre in city centre would be great for footfall and support the new northgate scheme.
